Grammy Nominated Artist Jenny Oaks Baker is one of America’s most beloved and accomplished violinists. In this guest blog post, she shares her powerful testimony of The Family: A Proclamation to the World. We love Jenny and are grateful for her words during this historic 20th anniversary celebration. Jenny’s father, Elder Dallin H. Oaks, is one of the original apostles who signed this prophetic document in 1995, and is a bold defender of the family.
I am so grateful for The Family: A Proclamation to the World! Its principles and teachings have blessed my life, and given me and my husband the direction that has enabled us to find true joy in our family life. I am grateful to know that God instituted marriage between a man and a woman in order to fulfill His great purposes, and to provide the best environment for children to be raised. Knowing that my primary God-given responsibility is to nurture my children, makes the sacrifices I make to do so completely fulfilling and gratifying. Knowing that my husband’s primary responsibility is to lovingly provide for our children’s protection and welfare makes me appreciate him even more for his dedicated efforts to do so.
I am also so very grateful to know that family relationships can be eternal- that families can be together forever! What a glorious and Godly truth this is–one that has comforted me through the loss of my dear mother and mother-in-law. Knowing that I will always be with my family, makes me try harder to develop good and lasting relationships with those I love, and makes these relationships even more sweet and satisfying.
As I see so many people in the world rejecting time-honored values, I am so grateful to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for standing firm on these teachings, and boldly declaring that “the family is ordained by God”. I hope that people throughout the world will take heed to the Proclamation’s warning that “the disintegration of the family will bring upon individuals, communities, and nations the calamities foretold by ancient and modern prophets.”
I know that this document is true and prophetic! It has blessed me and my family, and I thank my Father in Heaven for sending its message to the world during this time of confusion and strife. I know that abiding by its teachings will enable us all to have happier, more fulfilling lives and to eventually return to Live with God The Father and His Son, Jesus Christ.
